The American Election: Why Should We Care?
The American elections are well underway, and everyone seems to be obsessed with what ridiculous thing Donald Trump will say next. The one thing that no one seems to care about is how important the American election is to us Canadians. You might think, why should we care? Not only do we not live in America, but we’re either too young or barely old enough to vote. As odd as it may seem, the American election can and will affect Canada as well, including high school students.
First of all, the election matters to Canada and the rest of the world because the US is the leader of the western world, and has a lot of power in world affairs. They also are our largest trading partner. But, honestly, what person our age cares about that? What really matters is that the US can affect our economy. We’re at the point where we might be considering part-time jobs, or at least summer jobs. The economy of the US can either create jobs or make finding work very difficult and competitive, even here in Canada. If we all hope to make some extra money or get a job out of post-secondary, then we should be concerned about what the United States are doing to the economy, and in turn, who Americans elect to run their country.
Finally, I’m sure that most of us have ordered or bought something online before. If we want to buy something from the US for a reasonable price, our economy and dollar have to be doing well. Now, who affects our economy again? While America’s politics and election may seem far removed from our own little world, we should all be concerned about who makes it into the White House on November 8th and what effect it will have on all of us.
