The Apps You Should Download Before Opening Another Snapchat

With 2015 far behind us and the second semester quickly approaching I’ve rounded up some of the best apps to help you get on top of your game! Best news ever: they’re all FREE!

Duolingo: Take it from the students going to Guatemala this March break, this language learning app really works! An easy to use interface makes learning another language, brushing up on some old skills, and talking to the exchange students a breeze. It’s colourful, reminds you of your daily lessons, and reteaches trouble spots in your language skills! ¡Feliz que estudia!

RefME: Bumming off your friend’s Noodletools account because you’ve forgotten your password--again? Never fear, RefME is here! This app works by scanning the barcode of a book or journal and creating a citation in any style needed; APA, MLA, Chicago and more! Not only does this app scan books, but it also adds in websites and URLs that you’ve saved while completing your assignments. Pay attention grade 12 students, this app will save you so much agony next year!

Level: Absolutely suck at managing your money? Yeah, me neither, but for students who live off birthday money or paycheque to paycheque—this app is perfect for you. Level takes all the trouble out of budgeting and tells you how much money you can spend in one day depending on what you’re saving for. Level connects to your bank and credit cards and tracks your spending habits and income; saving up for overpriced movie tickets has never been easier!

Slice: For any students addicted to online shopping or bargain hunting Slice has just made your life that much easier. This app tracks shipments, finds the lowest price for that thing you just NEED to buy, as well as notifies you if there’s been a price drop on the product so you can claim it and get money back! On top of all this, the app also notifies you if any of the products you have purchased have been recalled, and helps you visualize what you spend your money on in cute little bubbles.

Companion: This wonderful app gives your loved ones, boyfriend or girlfriend, and friends peace of mind when you walk home alone at night. Now before you think this is creepy, just hold on and hear me out. Before leaving a party or the subway station after a group study sesh, enter in your destination into Companion and only the people you gave the destination to will see your path. This app works with people who don’t have the app installed as well, so you don’t have to force your squad to download this too. If you start running or if you drop your phone the app will prompt “ARE YOU O.K.?” and if you don’t respond within 15 seconds then the app will alert your companion(s).

Hopper: This next app is made for the students at B.A. with a serious case of wanderlust. This simple app works in two ways. It: 1) shows you the best time to fly and 2) the best time to buy tickets for that destination. So for all the students using Level properly to save up for a dream trip and for all the grade twelves planning grad trips, use this app to save you serious $$$ you could use towards food, pointless souvenirs, and selfie-sticks.

Pacifica: On a more serious note, many students at our wonderful school suffer from mental health issues and excessive stress. This app tracks your daily mood and physical health to see how your emotions and habits change over time. This app also gives you little tasks and challenges to improve mental health and help calm you down when you’re feeling down in the dumps. Another feature is a live chat room with other people who share the same issues as you. The chat room is a safe place where people can vent out their issues or ask for help when they are truly in a moment of panic. Though this app does not replace professional help, it’s a good place to start and a good place to manage all your built up stress. Take it from me personally, this app has really made dealing with built-up and everyday stress so much easier.

Noizio: Trouble falling asleep? That’s probably because you’ve been staring at a bright screen until 3 AM for the past week but hey, I don’t judge. The app lets you mix together a selection of ambient sounds to make your own perfect song to help you focus or fall asleep. Crisp sounds and an interface so simple the elementary students at Norseman can use it makes this app a personal favourite.

Dot: A shoutout to all my fellow female students out there, this app is a-m-a-z-i-n-g! Again this is another stupidly simple app and its main purpose is to track your period. Yes, I said it—period. No shame, girls. Without the Pro upgrade the app tracks your period and your chance of getting pregnant during your cycle. Simply enter in when your last period began to get started. Its fast, easy and best of all gives you a little heads up for when Auntie Flo comes into town. P.S: This app predicts when your next period is going to be and takes into account any medication, like birth control, that might effect your cycle!
