Climate Action? Make it Tru-Doe!
Within the last decade, Canada has fallen flat regarding its progression as an environmentally conscious international body. From the withdrawal of the Kyoto Protocol in 2011 to the current debates over the Trans-Canada pipeline, the climate has hardly been a priority. With the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference, the state of the environment needs to be acknowledged to ensure its protection for our generation.
On October 23rd, SCOPE along with Toronto 350 – our city’s chapter of the international group for climate justice – hosted Etobicoke Lakeshore’s newly elected MP James Maloney. Aiming to improve our country’s commitment to the environment, we saw this as an opportunity to share the change we wanted to see as the future generation. The topics discussed ranged from serious matters such as the KXL pipeline, the prospect of fossil fuel divestment, and indigenous relations, to the initiatives that SCOPE runs. After the tense and often difficult question period, we shared a cake with our Member of Parliament, urging to "Keep Fossil Fuels in the Ground".
We thank everyone involved for their active participation and commitment to the future of climate justice. Most importantly, we would not be heard if it were not for MP Maloney's enthusiasm for this riding. We extend our deepest appreciation to him and the newly-incumbent Liberal government in encouraging the involvement of students in federal affairs.
